American Service to India (ASTI)
is a unique aid organization in that ALL of your donations will reach their designated recipients in India. Since our entire staff is composed of non-paid volunteers, we have a minimum of overhead expense. Our areas of focus include:

Orphanages :

We have found that the children in orphanages usually have one thing in common; they are intelligent, hard working and serious minded. Given help and the opportunity, many will excel in higher education. Funded institutions include: Arunachalam Trust Tiruvanamilai, Ramakrishna Mission Student's Homes in Belgharia, Rahara and Chenai, and Deena Bandhu in Bangalore.

Medical :

ASTI's Mobile Medical Unit Program (MMUP) helps ensure ongoing medical services in rural areas. ASTI has established MMUP's throughout India including Silchar, Rahahanmundry, Trivandrapuram, Puri, Nattarampalli, Karimganj, Porbander, Lucknow, Rajahamundry, and Kankhal.

Education :

ASTI donors provide funds for all academic levels, concentrating on four areas:
  • Programs for tribal villagers
  • Training in hygene and family planning in remote areas
  • Vocation training for women in urban areas
  • Scholarships for economically disadvantaged children
Rural Support :

This includes a wide range of projects such as rebuilding schools and providing deep wells for pure drinking water. Farmers are taught improved agricultural techniques. Smokeless stoves and low cost latrines provide a healthier life for the villagers.

In education and medical aid the focus is in these areas:
  • Scholastic fundamentals and prep for advanced studies;
  • Education on healthcare for villagers
  • Vocational and skill training for men and women;
  • Vocational and skill training for the mentally and physically challenged.
  • Thirty endowments provide nurse’s training for young women at five teaching hospitals.
  • Hospitals and Dispensaries in India and Bangladesh receive support in cash and in kind.
  • Shipments of hospital supplies and equipment help support three hospitals. The equipment includes a medical lab, ultra sound, x-ray and dialysis machine, some new and some used, but fully operational.
  • Mobile Medical Units at eight hospitals and/or dispensaries are guaranteed continued maintenance and/or eventual replacement when ASTI provided a permanent fund with the understanding that the interest only be used for the above.
    Our Model Projects, which have received international and national awards, assist populations in creating sustainable economy in villages and remote mountain areas.

Two-thirds of ASTI's support comes from generous Indian American benefactors in the US. The remaining one-third comes from other Americans sympathetic to India's problems.
